In recent years the ubiquity of mobile computing platforms such as smartphones and tablet devices has rapidly increased. These devices provide a range of interaction in an untethered environment unimaginable a decade previously. With this ability to interact with services and individuals, comes the need to accurately authenticate the identity of the person requesting the transaction, many of which may carry financial or legally-binding instruction.
Biometric solutions (using modalities such as finger, face, iris and voice) have also seen increased prominence over the past decade with large-scale implementations in areas such as passport, visa and national identity card systems. Biometrics play an important role on mobile platforms utilising generic sensors (cameras, microphones, etc.), alongside devices specifically designed for biometric purposes (such as fingerprint sensors) and other sensors such as GPS, gyroscope and accelerometers. The growth of biometrics on mobile devices however raises a number of current and unresolved issues which require research-based solutions.
This special issue seeks to provide a showcase for current research topics involving biometric on mobile devices. Potential topics include but not limited to the following:
- novel authentication algorithms and modalities
- challenges of use within a mobile environment
- data security and policy
- template protection
- application domains
- usability and accessibility
- performance assessment
- mobile biometric deployment
- biometric systems performance
